Midweek News Update |
We had a fantastic Cursillo weekend. The candidates
were receptive and suitably irreverent to show little
respect for the foibles of Cursillo. There were many
tears and much laughter. Next time however we will
ask Doug Dunham not to bring his raccoon along. Bishop
Mary came to celebrate the final Eucharist. The new
Cursillistas from ECA are: Steve
and Joyce Wing, Rob McClaine, Margaret Allvey, Pauline
Gilligan, Hank and Colleen DeVoss, Doug and Betty
Wood, and Genevieve Doyle. Team members from ECA
included Doug and Kathy Dunham, Ron Howie and Melinda
Jennings, Robb and Gayle Moore, Pat Fox, Kim Petruzzelli,
Tim and Donna Miller, Kathy Mastre, and Jerry Long.
This Sunday is the Feast of Pentecost.
We will have special decorations courtesy of Melinda
Jennings (and Ron Howie) and the folk music will
be led by Melinda and Tim Miller. Following the
service Dave Byers and his merry men will prepare
a lovely barbeque for all. It is a wonderfully
inexpensive (read free) way to show your mother
that she is special. PLEASE WEAR RED!!!!!!!!!
Yours in Christ,
The Reverend Stephen Mills
From Bishop Mary: The Magnetic
Church conference, with nationally known evangelism
speaker, Andrew Weeks, is scheduled for May 16 and
17. I am sure that this conference, focused
on congregational development, will provide something
of value for all our congregations. I encourage you
to bring congregational development teams from your
parish so that you can maximize your learning, as
well as return to your parish with an action plan.
Please note that while much of the cost of this conference
is being provided through funds collected at the
consecration, a small fee will be required. If some
members of your congregation find meeting this fee
a challenge, please know that scholarships are available.
More information can be found at: http://www.edecr.org/magnetic-church.htm
Greetings from George and Nancy: We
arrived in Long Beach, Mississippi on Sunday evening
and met the rest of our team from El Camino Real. In
addition to our team, there are others from Indiana, Connecticut and
Nebraska. Joining us is a group of AmeriCorps volunteers
who are working with us too. So far we have had two
days of sweat, bugs, caulk, tiles, grout, saw dust,
counter tops, doors, flooring, bugs, heat, new people,
prayers and adventure filling our lives as we work
on Katrina relief. The storm devastation is
still very apparent everywhere. Schools, churches
and homes continue to have windows and roofs missing. There
are only a few buildings along the water front where
there were once hundreds of people living. The
spirit of the people is fantastic and filled with
hope.
We are currently working in Pass Christian to
complete a house by Friday for a single mom and her
3 children. We begin work by 7 and finish our
work day by 4. These are long hours of work,
punctuated by laughter, great food and not enough
sleep.
It is clear that our work is needed and your support
is appreciated. We have taken lots of photos
and will look forward to sharing our experience with
others when we return.
Blessings to you,
George and Nancy
From Bishop Shalita: Greetings
to you in the name of our risen and reigning Lord
and Saviour, Jesus Christ!
I’m writing with a heavy heart to share with
you the sad news about my wife's (Joy), illness for
she was admitted in Mulago National Referral
Hospital with abdominal pains and doctors have
diagnosed that she is to undergo an immediate operation
on her kidney which they termed as haemodialysis
at Ugshs 2,489,000. (USD 1,510), but this has come
at a time when am in a financial strain. I kindly
request you to come to my rescue with any assistance
possible so that this operation can be done.
Hoping to hear from you soon and I do request for
your prayers.
May the Lord bless you.
Rt. Revd Ernest M. Shalita,
This Week’s Readings: Day of Pentecost
Numbers 11:24-30
Psalm 104:25-35; 37
Acts 2:1-21
John 20:19-23
Theme: The Spirit comes to
the believers in a new way.
Moses gathers the 70 together to become the leaders
of the new Israel, but two, not chosen, have the
spirit rest on them also What does that say about
the choosing?. The psalmist praises God for the wonder
of creation and for God’s nurturing and sustaining
love. The disciples undergo a dramatic transformation
in the sight of all and a new community is born.
In John’s Gospel, Jesus comes to the disciples
in a new and surprising way.
